So I'm now officially 31 years old. Doesn't signify anything special, and I don't have any plans of having any grand celebrations like last year.
In fact, I think I may just enjoy the day with my family, watch The Expendables with my friends tomorrow, and enjoy the weekend as an older (and hopefully wiser) me. |

Yeah, guess I finally got around to start playing Batman: Arkham Asylum. So far, I can defenitely see what all the hype was about. You play Batman as voiced by Kevin Conroy, The Joker is of course voiced by Mark Hammill, and most other voices so far seem to be the ones we know from the cartoons.
The gameplay so far is stellar. Combat makes heavy use of countering attacks and looks like it would actually work, even if it'd take the goddamn Batman to pull it off. Often there alternatives to fighting, like stealth, misdirections, or how about hanging upside down from a gargoyle and grabbing a hapless psycopath as he passes uneerneath you, while the enemies become gradually more and more panicked as you take them down one by one. You never kill them though. You may even save a few violent inmates from certain death even if you knock them out with maximum prejudice later.
The game allows you to roam freely, discovering clues, solving riddles (of course), and exploring the massively athmospheric Arkham Asylum. It hasn't gotten boring so far :) |

I need to scrub my computer, maybe install a 64bit windows and a ton of ram as well, since any and all games I try to run have been running very badly lately. It's gotten to a point where I've bought Dragon Age: Origins (cheaply) for Xbox 360, so that I can actually get to see the damn ending without getting frustrated by extreme load times and laggy movement and such.
On the plus-side, the Xbox 360 version is easier, to a point where combat feels like that of a (good) action-RPG. Sure, it doesn't look as good as on PC (lower res textures, smaller screen resolution, etc.) and there are no mods (not that I was using any, because I wanted to see the ending of the game "vanilla" first), but it works, and I'm down to Orzammar, which is unfortunately still a boring grind fest compared to the rest of the game.
Oh yeah, another advantage to the Xbox 360 version is of course that I get achievements. Yay :P
Btw, I have more stuff to say about Mass Effect 2, but I'll let it wait until I'm done with my second replay, which I've failed to start so far.
More btw, I'm on the last month of my internship. So only 4 more weeks of real work assignments, good lunch, good coworkers, and so on. After that it's time to write my batchelor project. On the upside, this means I could be a full-fledged engineer around my 31st birthday. Better late than never, eh? |

Finally picked up my CE yesterday (still nearly two weeks after the Americans got it and a week after the official European street date)
and after figuring out how to install the Cerberus Network and stuff, I spent a few hours playing the game.
I've only done what amounts to two real missions, but I have some preliminary reflections/comments on the game:
- The Good:
- Mood:
It still feels like a Mass Effect game. It's a bit darker and edgier, but you're still playing Shephard, and the universe feels the same.
- Meeting old friends (and foes):
So far I've run into several familiar faces, in order of appearance: Tali, Joker, Dr. Chakwass, Fist, Helena Blake and Garrus.
Meeting Tali was cool, and meeting Garrus was actaully a bit heartwarming. I didn't feel we got to know him too well in the first game, but it defenitely feels like we're doing that this time around. And people like Fist and Helena Blake are of NPCs from missions in the first game, one was annoyed at seeing me, after I broke up his criminal organization, and the other was happy to be working as a social worker after I convinced her to give up her villainous life in the first game. Of course, it's possible to kill both of them in the first game as well.
- Dialogue is good:
The dialogue wheels are back, and are combined with occasional split second decisions, like stabbing a technician in the back (literally) or destroying some kids gun to keep him out of trouble. It works, even if it means you have to be a bit more attentive during conversations.
- Customization:
While it doesn't seem we get more armors other than the DLC stuff which all have non-removable helmets, the S7-armor that Shephard starts with is highly customizable.
It has several locations that you can play around with, like chest plate, shoulder guards, helmet, greaves and bracers, and you can choose what color and texture it has more or less.
You can also choose between four uniforms to wear when out of your armor, though I'd like a few more options there.
Also, the captains cabin has a wall for ship models, and a picture of your love interest from Mass Effect. So I have a picture of Liara on my table. Aww.
- Galaxy Map:
The galaxy map has a lot of improvements it seems, though you'll have to buy fuel to get from system to system, and scanning planets is a bit tedious.
Less so than having to do so in the Mako from the first game though.
- Minigames:
The Simon Says minigame from Mass Effect for decrypting and unlocking stuff is gone, replaced with two new and better systems. When opening locks you match nodes and connect them, when hacking, you look for code snippets, while avoiding the firewall. Both are on a timer which can be expanded with an upgrade, and it doesn't seem like there's a limit to how many times you can try to hack or unlock something. I like.
- Mission summary:
The first game actually did have missions as well, but now you get a summary after each one.
The summary is nice enough, and it seems like it's not actually given to Shephard, so much as it's relayed to The Illusive Man.
This works surprisingly well for me.
The Bad:
- Dumbing down of RPG elements:
Levelling has been majorly simplified, with each ability only having four ranks, that get progressively more expensive to buy.
You still control your allies' levelling though, and can still somewhat choose their weapons loadout, so it's not as bad as I'd heard.
Limited ammo and reloading Ejecting heat sinks in combat:
In a move to cater to the shooter-crowd, the game now uses disposable heat sinks that are replaced in combat to avoid overloading.
The old heat managing system is gone, and once you run out of heat sinks, you can't fire the weapon in question.
And you can't just let the weapon cool down either. I think I'd have preferred a retcon and limited magazines rather than the poor explanation they've used for going from effectively unlimited ammo to this system though.
- New cover system:
This is something most people are probably happy with, but one of the mayor problems I have with the game.
Mass Effect borrowed a lot of elements from IOI games like Freedom Fighters and Kane & Lynch: Dead Men. Like taking cover by moving towards it and giving orders to your allies with a fairly simple system.
Mass Effect 2 instead chose a much more popular system, that found in the game Gears Of War. The cover system in that game was one of the main reasons I gave up on it, as using the run button to go into cover feels counter-intuitive for me, and having to press it a few times to vault over cover is just annoying.
- Lack of weapon stats:
There isn't a simple way to see how good each weapon is, other than trial and error. I currently have three assault rifles to choose from for example, one has a huge magazine, another has a small magazine but is very precise and heavy-hitting, and I've got a Collector rifle I haven't tried out yet.
I'd like to be able to see simple things like an ammo count and accuracy/damage numbers at a glance rather than trial and error though.
I'm sure there are other obeservations I can make about the game, but they'll have to wait. Can't wait to get to play some more though :) |

| So, who's busy playing Mass Effect 2? Not me unfortunately. I've preordered the collector's edition from CoolShop.dk and a friend of mine has two preorders at GameStop (due to cheap tradeins and such), but it appears most of Europe has gotten massive delays on getting our CEs. Currently it looks like I'll be getting the game on Friday (the 5th), but keep in mind the regular editions came out in Europe last Friday, and that the US got the game even earlier. Not that I'm not used to delays of course, but it's still quite aggravating, trying to avoid spoilers, and not being able to chip in on discussions on whether the game has been streamlined or dumbed down. And of course, there's the risk I won't be getting my CE at all.
On another note, I'll be starting to (possibly) take classes again from tomorrow, where I'm going to attend my first class on Artificial Intelligence and Multi-user Systems. I'm still doing my internship though, so I may need to work extra the rest of the week so I can take half a day off every Tuesday to go to classes. Also, I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to going to classes again or dreading it. One of the people responsible for the course is one of my favorite teachers at DTU though, so here's hoping I'll enjoy learning again. And hoping a Mass Effect 2 CE will be going my way before someone spoils the plot to me :) |

So what am I actually doing as an intern? Remember I'm only about half a year from being able to call myself an engineer, and this is part of that, so I'm not pushing papers, sweeping floors, or other make-work.
What I'm doing is building a tool that can search a log consisting of huge amounts of xml files. For this I'm using several different technologies, most of which I haven't used before for one reason or another, and I've been forced to learn entirely new programming and query languages:
- Microsoft Indexing Service (and Indexing Service Query Language)
- IIS (with classic ASP/VB script/xhtml)
- XML DOM (Xpath/XSL)
- XML databases (currently dropped, but used XQuery and XPath)
- Dynamic content (JavaScript)
On top of this, I'm working in a realistic environment (since it's an actual workplace with other developers), on a product that someone will actually use, and I have to use internal tools for stuff like documentation, test cases, issues, etc. as well. Well, I could do without the documentation, but I may as well get used to that part :P
It's not unlikely I'll use some of the new technology I've learned (namely XPath/XSL and JavaScript) on this site in the future of course. |

| I've watched and enjoyed a few movies lately. There are still a few I'm missing, like Boondock Saints 2, due to delayed or non-existing Danish release dates. Nonetheless, here are a few movies I've watched in the past 2-3 months and enjoyed:
- The Men Who Stare At Goats
I watched this weirdly funny movie in New York in November. It's got quirky humor, jedi warriors, psych warfare (psychic and psychological), and is named for a person staring at a goat and stopping its heart.
- James Cameron's Avatar
Three things: First, don't watch it for its plot. Second, do watch it in 3d. And last but not least, James Cameron is back. After not making any good movies for several years, he's back with the most intense action I've seen for years.
- Sherlock Holmes
Don't let the trailers fool you: while the world's greatest detective is a bit more action oriented (and stubbled), it's not a braindead action fest. Holmes' methods are still based off his brillaint intellect and he behaves like a magnificent bastard, and Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are perfect in the roles. There'll most likely be a second movie to follow this, and I'm most defenitely going to watch it.

| And it's now (as of 6 hours ago) officially a new year, possibly a new decade (or does that start at 2011? I never can remember), and I've celebrated that in the traditional manner, over-eating, drinking somewhat heavily (but not compared to a few weeks ago), watching the Queen's New Year speech, Dinner For One/90 års fødselsdagen, singing a few traditional Danish hymns, including a psalm specifically for the new year, the national hymn, and the first verse of a song about an old King of ours called Kristian. It includes a line about hitting so hard that the goth's helm and brain burst (literally: "så gotens hjælm og hjerne brast"), and of course watching/firing off some fireworks.
I was with some nice people this year, I didn't get too drunk, I have all of my appendages and eyes, and so on, so all in all a good celebration, with my only problem a possibly bent rib from a few weeks ago, and I couldn't feel that after getting a little to drink (or I forgot about it).
All in all, a good start of the year, for me at least. Here's hoping the rest of 2010 will treat us all nicely. |

It's officially December 24th, which is the main christmas celebration day and evening in Denmark, with gifts being handed out and so on and so forth. Managed to get the last gift bought yesterday before the shops closed so now I just need to wrap them, get some sleep, enjoy the food and festivities with my family and play some Fallen Earth. Not likely to be in that order though.
Also, watched Avatar in arguably the biggest/best cinema in the country in 3d. I'd expected the 3d to be gimmicky much like the 3d movies of yore. It wasn't. I think the film may have sold me on 3d movies in the future, it was that good. Sure, it had a formulaic plot, the acting wasn't outstanding, but the effects rocked the world and the action even more so, so it was defenitely worth the price of admission.
Despite having made Titanic, James Cameron still knows how to direct solid action. The not-so-actiony parts were quite good too though, and I disagree with Cracked.com that it was 90 minutes of boredom followed by 40 minutes of awesome. Well, the last 40 minutes certainly were awesome, but so was the first part of the movie, if in a different way. So there... |

| Alright, I'll just list these as bullet points:
- Christmas dinner last Friday. Can't remember anything after the fish due to a massive blackout, which is apparantly due to massive amounts of schnapps (or snaps as it's spelled here). This was at work, so I may be taking some abuse from it. Good thing my body has a purge function though. It's disgusting at work, but it keeps me from getting alcohol poisoning, though again, opens up for abuse.
- Found a new MMO to play while waiting for SW:TOR. It's called Fallen Earth, it's set in a post-apocalyptic world, has massive crafting (in fact, if you want gear, that's the best way to get it), no fast travel (normally not a selling point for me, but works in this case), real-time first/third person shooter/melee battles (again, normally I prefer a turn-based approach but it works). There's a website if people really want to know about it.
- Still haven't completed Dragon Age: Origins. Busy with work, christmas preperations, Fallen Earth, sleeping, and so on. Also, like so many other good games, I've made several characters, the current one being a female city elf rogue. There's a social site too btw.
- Watching Avatar later today with people from work. From what I hear, the first 90 minutes are boring as fuck (or at least as Titanic, which I still haven't seen), but the last 40 minutes should make up for it and show that James Cameron is still one of the best action directors. We'll see in about 8-9 hours.
- Christmas is on Thursday (we give gifts on Christmas Eve not the day after) and I still haven't bought a single present. And my own wish list is apparantly lacking too, but what can you do. Anyways, this means I'll be enjoying the crowds of late shoppers again this year. *Doesn't like crowds*

I've spent the last week in New York City, and just got home less than 15 minutes ago.
I bring phat lewtz in the form of cheap, but authentic designer-brand clothes (including a new coat and leather gloves) as well as pirate themed rum and licorice in large amounts from Keflavik airport.
Pics or it didn't happen I've got no pictures whatsoever, since I couldn't find the charger for my digital camera, but I discovered that you enjoy travelling a lot more when you're looking around you, using your peripheral vision and not looking at the tiny display on a camera. This goes double in NYC since you're at all times surrounded by majestic buildings on all sides, and even more so when going by ferry to Liberty Island as you get to bask in the view that is the Manhattan skyline, as well as standing in the shadow of the statue of Liberty, or in Central Park while still seeing the buildings just on the edge of the massive park. And so on...
Anyway, the trip was amazing despite some familiar problems along the way, though I'm horribly jetlagged and haven't played Dragon Age: Origins for a week. So I need to get to it :) |

There's been no news from me for a while, but it's not because I haven't been busy. In fact, rather the opposite.
Especially after I started my internship at Transvision five weeks ago, I haven't had a lot of spare time, and what I've had has been spent on a batchelor party and wedding, several games (notably Borderlands and Dragon Age: Origins), practical stuff regarding my internship, and not least, a trip to New York City, which I'm leaving for in about 4 hours. |

Yup, since we're past midnight, I'm now officially 30 years old, and, I suppose, an adult or an old person or whatever.
I'm spending the evening drinking a celebratory beer (Budvar lager to be precise) and drawing the front page for an invitation that'll be sent out some time tomorrow.
It's been too long since I sat down and properly drew something, and I'm enjoying it so far. My medium of choice is a regular, if large (0.7mm), mechanical pencil and copy paper, though I'll ink the drawings once I'm done (if I can find my quality felt tips) and do a final scan, then make a composite and color the whole thing if I'm not dead tired and drained by then.
We'll see.
Anyway, happy birthday to me, and to good ol' HP Lovecraft as well. |

| Link: http://www.brotherpain.dk/#66 |

I'm an avid player of Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games (or MMORPGs), and have been for quite a few years.
The games I've played so far include (in no particular order) EQ, EQII, AO, DaoC, AoC, LOTRO, WoW, CoH/CoV, V:SoH, GW, DDO, RGTR, EVE and WAR.
That's not necessarily an exhaustive list btw, and I haven't counted any free-to-play MMOs. There are a few of these games I keep coming back to, namely World of Warcraft and City of Heroes/Villains.
There are also quite a few of these that I played only for a short time and then abandoned due to how crap they were (WAR and AoC), sometimes saving my money by finding out how bad or incompatible with my play style a given game is in beta or trial (Vanguard, EVE Online).
Interestingly, the really bad ones are the ones that tend to send you fresh invites with free temporary account activation and such, and in the span of a day or two I've gotten my account reactivated for both WAR and AoC, and have revisited both games.
WAR has greatly improved, simply due to the adding of the missing classes. It's still focused on PvP which I don't care for though. AoC, well, I remember why I dropped it like a red headed stepchild. It's still a resource hog, still has crappy twitch-based game play, still has useless, horrible crafting, still has naked breasts, bloodshed and dismemberment, but dialog and quests written so the game can cater to the 14-year olds it seems to really be aimed at. Neither game seem to be worth the re-download in other words.
So what makes me come back to WoW and CoH? Well, it's partly the people (The social element is hugely important in MMOs), partly the graphics/design (WoW is beautiful, has characters and races with, well, character, CoH lets you design your own characters, nearly no matter what concept you may have in mind), and both games have fairly low requirements, which means they run incredibly well on my gaming rig, which was state of the art about two years back. Both games also don't force PvP down my throat, allow for both rich solo and group play, don't have really annoying interfaces, and have achievement-like systems.
I actually think either City of Heroes or Star Wars Galaxies was the first MMO (maybe first game) to have badges/achievements that you could unlock, and while WoW and CoH do achievements/badges somewhat differently, they both have both casual and not at all casual achievements, and both have that nicely addictive quality that any good MMO should have for people to stick with it.
Interestingly, I only got to max level in WoW last year, and am not quite there (but nearly) in CoH, despite playing both games on and off since their respective betas (WoW closed EU and CoH US preorder beta access), but I guess I suffer from Altitis. |

| 18-03-2009 00:37:06 CET- "Who watches the watchmen?" |
| Link: http://www.brotherpain.dk/#64 |
|
| Well, I for one did.
Actually, I just came home from watching a sneak-premiere (we Europeans get everything later than the Americans, despite living in the future). and I must say I'm positively surprised.
I'm a big fan of the original comic. I read parts of it back when I was a kid, and was really intrigued by the whole thing, even if I didn't understand a lot of what was going on. A few years back I bought a deluxe edition of the Watchmen and I've read it back to back several times.
The movie did change a few things. I won't go into spoilers right now, but I'll say a lot of the changes helped the movie better along, and some even made better sense than the comic. Of course, some things I was a bit annoyed by, but the biggest negative I can really mention is the excessive use of slow motion. At the same time, I understand why it was used, since it gives the appearance of a comic frame and lets the viewer see the details more clearly than a fast, rough and tumble battle (for example) would allow. Certain cast I disagreed upon, but most of the cast was excellent, including Rorschach, Dan Dreiberg, Hollis Mason, Edward Blake, Dr. Manhattan and even Sally Jupiter and her daughter played excellent.
As has been mentioned everywhere, the movie had a lot of blue penis, staying true to the comic in that respect, but I'd say the people taking offense at that sound homophobic at best. In my opinion, it made Dr. Manhattan resemble a Greek statue, which I think is the point.
Also a note should go out about the music. The music fit the theme of the movie, the time it takes place (1985), and even fit the scenes various songs were used. Like All Along The Watchtower, 99 Luftballons, The Sound Of Silence, and two Leonard Cohen songs, one of them First We Take Manhattan, which played as the credits rolled.
Anyway, I'm not going to put numerical scores to the movie (maybe later), but I'll give my verdict: Totally didn't suck. Go watch it now. I'd advice reading the comic first (because it's an excellent read), but it's not required to enjoy and understand the movie. |

I finally handed in my project in Introductory Programming in MATLAB. The deadline is today (before midnight), but it's always nice to hand in ahead of time.
The assignment in and of itself wasn't a big problem, as MATLAB is a very nice programming environment that's actually fairly easy to work with, especially when it comes to matrixes, vectors, and plotting of such, but I ran into some minor bugs that needed to be ironed out.
One was something like using
if Snew(i,j) > 0.01 & Snew(i,j) < 1
instead of
if S(i,j) > 0.01 & S(i,j) < 1
Another was running a for loop 0:K instead of 0:K-1, and the final one, which I spent a good while looking for, was a copy pasta error, where I'd forgotten to rename two variables used from vy to vx. Made a huge difference in the end result, but not enough that it was easy to find.
In the end, one of my friends looked over my code and helped find these errors which I had looked for (and at) for so long that they had become invisible to me. Funny thing. The looking at other peoples code to find errors they've spent hours looking for is usually my role.
Ohwell, maybe I'm just getting old :P
Anyway, it's now time for a well deserved coffee break, and I think I may just mix it with a rare rum-break.
Cheers! |

| 13-01-2009 02:57:22 CET- "Here comes the zombie apocalypse!" |
| Link: http://www.brotherpain.dk/#62 |
|
I received Left4Dead in the mail yesterday, and finally managed to install and play through the first campaign (aptly called "No Mercy") on normal difficulty.
Despite the stupid name, which I get by the way, the game stars 4 survivors, I have to admit the game is the ultimate zombie apocalypse game.
The zombies aren't your classical slow, shambling undead, which one of the characters (horror-movie buff Zoey) actually complains about at one point, but the entire group is armed to the teeth, so it's probably for the best.
The regular zombies do shamble around, but when they get close enough to spot you, at least some of them seem to react by charging you. It's not lone regular zombies that are the problem though, indeed, you may even want to just ignore them, but there are a few other types of Infected as the game calls them, and those you cannot ignore:
The Hunter is quick and agile, able to make huge leaps, and are pretty damn hard to hit. Also aggressive bastards actively looking for you it seems.
The Boomer is a fat zombie that shambles towards you and explodes when it's close enough. This has two distinct and nasty effects that mean that you don't want the Boomer to get close, ever: First, you get sprayed with bile, which means you can't see anything for long enough to be killed several times. Second, the smell of the bile draws a Horde of zombies towards your location. The combination of these make the Boomer bad news all around.
The Witch looks like a young girl, crying in a dark corner. I made the mistake of attacking one, expecting it to be no more lethal than a regular zombie, but it's tough and fast and it seems she calls another Horde. I may be wrong as I only met one of them.
The Tank is a regular behemoth. He deals a ton of damage, and can take even more. I fired about 20-30 rounds from a Benelli M4 Super 90 into it before it died on Normal (the second easiest) difficulty and it nearly made mincemeat of me in the process.
The Smoker drags a survivor close to it with a long tendril which may be a tongue or its intestines. I didn't have time to check. This can be incredibly bad when you've gotten to high ground with your group, and one of the bastards pull one of you down into the waiting horde. It also explodes into a noxious smoke which is both a little damaging and blocks sight when it dies.
The Horde as mentioned above is a huge amount of Infected that charge at you, sometimes from various directions. They can spawn by themselves or be summoned by other types of undead.
As far as I've understood, the spots and times that the different types of zombies spawn is somewhat random in single-player/coop campaigns, and can be placed by the Director in Versus mode. This makes the game unpredictable and more than a little bit scary, especially as you sometimes don't have any more than the tight beam flashlight from your guns to see by.
The campaigns are split into different parts by safe rooms that allow the level to load, and contains much needed ammo and first aid kits, as well as guns so you can swap your main weapon if you want.
At the start of the campaign you can choose between twp main weapons: Shotgun - probably some Remington variant or an Uzi SMG. As well as this you start with a first aid kit, pain pills (which gives temporary health but work much faster than the kit) and a grenade (either a pipe-bomb that beeps and attracts zombies or a molotov cocktail). You also start with what I think is a a Colt pistol, though I'm not sure of the brand, which has unlimited ammo. All the weapons have flashlights with unlimited batteries, and you can only carry one of each item (kit, pills, bomb), and of course only one main gun.
You can improve your weapons with a secondary pistol (which gives you 30 shots before reloading instead of 15), and better main weapons, like an M-16A2 assault rifle, a Benelli M4 S90 semi-auto shotgun, or a scoped hunting rifle.
There are also mounted gattling guns in some places, but they take time to start up, and they visibly overheat after a couple of seconds of sustained fire.
In the first campaign you occasionally had to activate various objectives, like a lift, elevator, or door switch. These tend to be noisy and attract zombies of course. At the end you fight your way to a rooftop on a 30-story building and activate a radio so a helicopter will come and pick you up. When I got to this point, I was told to hang in there and wait for the chopper, which went sort of well, but then the chopper showed up and we had to leg it. In the proceeding chaos as the roof flooded with zombies, I managed to lose three of my four team-mates, with one of the casualties being myself, but the last survivor made it to the chopper at least.
Anyway, the as I said, the game so far seems like the ultimate zombie-game, and I'm looking very much forward to trying it co-op with some friends to scream bloody murder at. Also, I'll have to try Versus mode at some point, if just to try playing the zombies.
Come to think of it, that's one of the few things I can say (so far) is missing from the game actually: The ability to play zombies against a group of AI-controlled humans.
Also, while activating the game on Steam (which still irks me, even if it's nowhere near as bad as when I first installed Half-Life 2) I got an ad for buying the entire X-Com series on Steam for €4.99, which I of course couldn't resist. |

Well, Christmas is the main celebration of capitalism, with a good deal of some companies' entire yearly income coming from December shopping.
I suppose it's also one of the bigger days of the Gluttons' Oecumenical Brotherhood and of Alcohol Imbibers Without Borders. Making up names of organisations is fun.
Anyway, I'm off for a day or two to see the family, off being about 16 km from here, and the family being 4 other people, but still.
Anyway, the point of this thing is obviously to with everyone/anyone who may be reading this a good celebration of whatever they choose to celebrate around the 24th of December. |

Right, so I have an oral exam (Cryptology 1) in about 13 hours, and a written exam (Probability) two days after that.
Right now, I'm scrambling to be properly prepared for tomorrow. Problem is that we have a wide array of topics, and I have to present a random one with no preparation time, so I have to prepare 10 minutes of speech for each of 12 topics in addition to prepping the entire curriculum. And while I've started a good while ago, I'm feel that I'm far from ready. I understand the basic concepts of cryptology, and I can do the necessary math for some classic ciphers, but I feel I don't have a proper understanding of some of the basic modular arithmetic, and some of the more advanced ciphers and concepts.
And as I said, the topic for tomorrow is random, so if I pick something like cryptanalysis of the Viginére cipher, I'll probably do okay, but if I have to describe certain of the other concepts I may be fucked. I'll avoid mentioning which exactly, both because I'm not entirely certain which topic would be worst, and in part not to jinx it. Not that I'm superstitious, but I do have a lot of experience with bad luck.Anyway, I'd better bite the bullet, grab a cup of coffee and continue preparing. And hope for the best obviously...
Unfortunately not very surprising, I didn't pass. Couldn't remember a single formula to describe the public/private keys for either RSA or ElGaman, nor the exact procedure with encrypting/decrypting with them or signing a message.
Damn, I hate oral exams. |

So, I'm very interested in cryptology, and have gone so far as to follow a course on it this last semester covering both cryptography and cryptanalysis. Unfortunately both are mostly heavy math, which is very much not my forte.
Even if I somehow manage to pass the course, it's certainly not something I'll be working with professionally.
Still, it's nice to have first hand knowledge of exactly how systems like RSA and digital signatures work, even if actually implementing (or attacking) such systems is way outside my skill level. |

Hmm, more than two months since my last post. Let's see...
I'm not really playing WAR anymore as its focus on PvP combined with lack of diversity in character looks, and a few other things simply turned me off the game, and when I got a message that my grace period was up, I realized I hadn't logged in for several weeks, and didn't bother signing up with a payment plan for my account. Shouldn't have bought that expensive Collector's Edition, but what can you do...
Since then, however, several new games are out. I've played through Fable II, which at first seems like a great game, but turns out to be just as completely linear as the first in the series amongst other things. Then there's Fallout 3, which has good and bad sides enough for a totally seperate post, which I'll make at some later point. Suffice to say, it's better than Oblivion, but it's unfortunately still a BethSoft game, so dialog is crap.
On other fronts, the semester is nearly at an end. I've got an assignment to turn in at noon tomorrow, I've got exams coming up in two weeks which I don't feel ready for, and I've yet to find an internship.
Also, my sleep cycle is completely fucked up again, with me sleeping my day away and staying awake all night. I guess I need to take up my coffee habit again so I can fix it....
Also, I really need to get a preview function made for when I write these posts. Or maybe a new site? We'll see when I have time for stuff like that. Not likely to be anytime soon. |

My last post on WAR wasn't very positive because GOA completely dropped the ball when it came to OB. They've since gotten their act somewhat together, and have even offered 7 days of free playtime to anyone that had beta access (if I understand correctly anyway) because we didn't properly get to try out the game.
That being said, with the head start being active now, but with only some of the servers open, the queue to get into a server usually starts at around half an hour worth of people, and I'm actually waiting to get into the game as I write this. The problem is that I'm sure the people with CE head start access are the people who'll be playing this game for a long time, and that means that the server congestion and queues will probably still be a problem several months from now if not longer. I hope not, but we'll see.
On another note, WAR seems like a great game so far, with the only real gripe I have with it being that I actually prefer the Order races and classes (not least because I'm a huge fan of WHFRP) but my guild is playing Destruction. Ah well, what can you do? :) |

| 08-09-2008 23:00:09 CET- "WAR Open Beta" |
| Link: http://www.brotherpain.dk/#53 |
|
| This rant may not hold any interest for most people, but since that's the case for this site, at least until I get some proper content updates going, it doesn't really matter.
So, the WAR Open Beta started yesterday. Or rather, it did if you were already in the closed beta or if you live outside of Europe. If however you were stupid enough to preorder a game with the GOA logo on it, there's no such luck, as the account creation center wasn't even put online until a few hours before OB was supposed to start.
Long story short, this means that the first two days of OB in Europe has already been lost, that the entire OB will probably go the same way.
Now some people may say that it's inconsequential, as it's beta anyway, but the fact is that the vast majority of the people in OB that weren't in closed beta payed for the privilege through preordering of either the Collector's Edition of the game, or an overpriced version of the Standard Edition.
Another problem is that since the start of the real game is little over a week away (it's on the 18th) and the same people who've payed to get into OB have also payed to get access to a head-start on the servers on Sunday, it's not looking good at all.
It's really too bad, as I had high expectations of WAR, but it seems more and more likely that no matter how good the game is, GOA, the company running the EU version, have given the game a horrible reputation already, which will at best make sure that the game will not become a big success in Europe, and quite likely it will ruin the game for the people who have already decided to try it out.
I'd love to be proved wrong, and to see WAR become a great game, a huge success in Europe, and for it to be worthy of the time and money I'm going to invest in it, but so far I've invested about €110 and two full days (because the messages from GOA have constantly been of the "It's just around the corner"-type), and I haven't seen Jack shit. |

Right, so I'm finally (almost) done packing, and I still need to get a few things done like shave (complicated by not being able to find the cable to charge my shaver's dead battery), shower, and then go get a bus to the airport. The bus leaves 7.10 so I have nearly 3 hours to go.
Meanwhile, I feel like I'm dehydrating quite a bit (water comes in, sweat comes out) and that my stomach is finally paying me back for those gin and tonics, double Havana Clubs, and what else that I had the day before yesterday.

| We handed in the project close to 1PM today, but before the deadline, so that means I now have two months of spare time to look forward to, which is nice since we actually worked for over 24 hours straight trying to get the last bits of the report done, so we really need a long break from this stuff now.
I also finally got my grade in Computer Science Modelling, but the bad news is that I failed the course. It's not that I'm surprised, but it's still annoying, as that means that my studies will be delayed half a year, and that I'll finish while I'm 30 but not before I turn 30 as planned. It also means that I likely won't be starting my internship until the beginning of next year, but this isn't all bad, as it means I'll have more time to actually find an internship, and it also means that I have time to take my remaining electives before I have to do my final project instead of the same time as, and I have access to all the courses that can only be taken during fall, such as Introduction To Cryptography and such. |

| Link: http://www.brotherpain.dk/#48 |

Worked until half past midnight today (mostly yesterday obviously) because we have to present a prototype for out project at the third and last milestone tomorrow (which is technically today).
Along the way I've learned a lot of servlets, jsp, javabeans, and keeping your design and layout seperated from your logic. That's a great idea btw, but it takes a lot of effort to implement properly, especially when you're used to messy PHP-coding asI am (as anyone who's taken a gander at the source of this site could tell you).
I've spent the last couple of days getting the last bits to work, getting it to work properly, even with the neccessary updates to the database, validating all the xhtml and css and finally getting a bunch of batch-files written so it can be easily installed and run on a clean machine for the presentation.
Anyway, this is the first real all-nighter of the project. The project is unusual in the fact that we actually have a complete code-freeze now, and just have a ton of writing ahead of us, in the form of domain models, timing and sequence diagrams, sitemaps, and adding comments to our code. Also regular documentation, tests, and getting a windows installer up and running that hopefully will allow the people who rate the project to pick and choose which parts of the project to install.
Anyway (again) I'm pretty bummed out, tired as hell, and my stomach has been playing up for the last couple of days.
So what's the point of this post? Venting, mostly. Oh, I'm trying out D&D 4th Ed. for the first time on Tuesday, which I'm looking forward to. So far, the plan is to make a Tiefling Ranger, which is a sub-par combination with no attribute synergy whatsoever. Not that it matters to me obviously :) |

| 16-06-2008 22:55:13 CET- "GTA IV vs MGS4" |
| Link: http://www.brotherpain.dk/#47 |
|
Just to make a thing clear, GTA IV is not a 10. It's a good game, but it has its flaws, some of them having been there since GTA 3, like not being able to save the game whenever the fuck you want to.
Is it better than MGS4? I'm guessing no, but since I haven't bought a PS3 yet, I haven't tried MGS4 yet, and the stuff I hear about installs mid-game and even longer cutscenes than in MGS2 (which had too long cutscenes, by far) don't sound good. But it's still Metal Gear, it has Solid Snake (called Old Snake now) at the helm, and I have a soft spot for that combination.
Of course, the whole debacle is sort of moot, what with 10 (or 100% or whatever) represents not just the top tier in my mind, but a near-perfect game. I'd give the score to Fallout, though I'd lower it due to the bugs, and Fallout is the best game I've played. Ever. If we ignore the "special" scale that most game reviewers use, that is, that 5 doesn't represent an average game but an abysmal one, then I'd put GTA IV somewhere between 7 and 8. Good game, but far from perfect with multiplayer but not for co-op. Gabriel Knight: Sins Of The Fathers is a solid 9, as is Monkey Island 3 btw. Just for reference. |

I used to love GTA. It was great fun, especially in multiplayer. GTA 2 wasn't quite as good, but still a fun game.
Then I bought GTA 3 for the PS2. I hated the controls, the camera angle, and the freeform-but-not-really gameplay, and I sold it to a friend of a friend within a couple of days.
This means I haven't played any of the later GTA games, and I certainly hadn't planned on buying GTA IV when it came out.
Alas, I happened to find it at a reduced cost, and in a moment of weakness, I bought it.
The good news is that so far, I really like the game. Maybe it's because the controls are slightly better on the Xbox 360 than on the PS2, or I've just gotten used to using a controller to a higher degree. Or it could be the characters, story, and charm of the game. Or any number of other reasons. In any case, I'm enjoying the game, even the driving (despite usually hating "proper" driving games) and having to aim and shoot with the triggers also works, despite my preference for the original GTA's "point in the general direction and hold down the trigger"-method of aiming, but I suppose that for a 3d game it's nice to be able to aim for someones head or cructh (for example).
Also, it doesn't hurt that locking on to an enemy with the left trigger and shooting with the right is actually comfortable, as opposed to locking on to anything with the shoulder buttons on the DS2 controller, which is as close to an act of self-mutilation as I'm ever going to perform. |

Exams are done as of the start of last week, and I've been working on the last big project of the semester for this entire week, and will continue to do so for the next two weeks.
I was planning on playing some Rock Band or AoC yesterday, after finishing work for the day, but I managed to make a nasty cut across one finger, and while it's nothing serious, it bled like hell, and unless I want the wound to spring open (and bleed more) I can't use the finger.
That means no WASD-controls, no guitar controllers, and resorting to an improvised 9-finger system for typing this. It's a bit unnerving that I'm already at a point where it nearly doesn't slow down my typing.
Anyway, no big news other than that, though I can do without having news like this to report. Hope I won't regret getting a tetanus booster, since it's 14-18 years since I had my last one. Still, it's not the first nasty cut I've had. One altered my thumb print permanently, one meant that I had to dig a piece of glass out of my heel a month after the wound had closed, and that was actually done with the exact same craft knife, so I hope it's alright. Haven't had a major infection since I had an ingrown toenail so bad that it eventually came out the front of the toe.
Btw, in case it sounds like I'm macho, or trying to sound that way, it's in no way the case. I'm just deadly afraid of needles, and I like to gross people out with medical stories like these :) |

It was C++ Programming, so not terribly hard, though the facts that I've mainly coded C, and that I haven't exactly been following the lectures (because they were literally as waste of time) didn't make it any easier.
Anyway, that means that I've just got the two worst ones left: An oral exam in Introductory Artificial Intelligence on Monday, where I have to defend one of the worst reports I've ever made, and a written exam next Monday, in a topic (Computer Science Modeling) that I completely suck at.

I was assaulted a couple of years back. It shook me up pretty badly, even though I ran from the bastards, and I still have problems moving through the area where it happened to this day.
Today, on my way home, I passed by a bus stop with 4 or 5 young, white guys sitting in a group, drinking. I passed by them, and they proceeded to yell at me, and at least one of them threw a bottle in my general direction. One of them decided to run after me, yelling repeatedly if I wanted anything to fight, and I backed away, telling him I didn't want anything. He told me to run if I didn't want to get beat up, and I ran, with the bastard yelling lots of swears and slurs at me.
Now I didn't get hurt physically at all, but the thing is, this was very close to where I live. In other words, it means that I don't feel safe in this area anymore, and I probably never will, which is obviously incredibly unpleasant.
I hope I never meet the bastards again, but this was on a Friday, around midnight, in a place that usually has people around at that time, and if they're willing to be that aggressive and violent, and openly so, in such an area, well...
Bottom line is, I'm all shook up again, my nerves are rattled, and my safe zone is no longer safe. I know that no place truly is, but it's always unpleasant to get that fact shoved violently in your face like that.
Hopefully, a drink will calm my nerves a bit, and even more hopefully I won't get into a similar incident before I move away from this area in about 1-2 years... |

So, my first exam of the year is less than a week from now (May 22nd) and I'll be busy with more exams in the following week and a half.
Unfortunately, before that I have a few mandatory assignments that need to be handed in. One of them has a deadline in just under ten hours.
I usually don't have (large) problems with these sort of assignments, but I guess the topic in question (computer science modelling) just isn't something that remotely interests me, at least not to the degree of doing 10 ECTS points of it.
Ah well, back to work. Who knows, I may still be able to turn in a half-decent report, though signs point to that not being the case...
And as a late edit, I did get the bloody thing handed in around two hours before the deadline, because there comes a time when you realize that you're just not going to make any more of an assignment, and printing takes time.
In any case, my body is now wrecked by lack of sleep combined with being groggy from just waking from a way too short power-nap, and my stomach is the usual black churning, demon-infested hole it always becomes when I mix no food, lack of sleep, stress, and lots of strong coffee of course.
I prefer my coffee black as night and strong enough that you have to chew when drinking it :P
Anyway, with just one (not so important) assignment left - one that does not directly affect my grades, and has a deadline that coincides with a very hard exam, I think I know where my focus is going to be at.
Aaaanyway, there are several reasons I should never write these posts when I'm tired, one being that I may write something I'll regret (and the internet never forgets), and the other being that I get very long-winded :P |

| 03-05-2008 12:25:59 CET- "I am Iron Man" |
| Link: http://www.brotherpain.dk/#41 |
|
Or at least I watched the movie yesterday. Now I have to admit, I haven't ever closely read the comic, but I've watched the horrible old cartoons based on Kirby drawings, and I know the background and the characters. So, what did I think of the movie?
Actually, I thought it was good. Great even. It worked as a movie in it's own right, but gave a ton of little nods to people who are familiar with the comic. They updated the origin story from the Vietnam war to Afghanistan, but Marvel has retconned that bit of Iron Man's origin story several times anyway, and it made sense. They changed The Mandarin to an organization called The Ten Rings, which again works much better than a silly Asian (I think he's Mongolian, but I've no idea really) wearing ten magical rings he found in the wreck of a UFO. They changed a few other things as well, like having Stark know some of the characters at the start of the story instead of getting to know them later, but you have to condense the story a bit to make it work in a movie, so that's acceptable.
Anyway, the casting was great, the fun scenes were actually fun, Stark was a drunken, womanizing asshole (at first anyway) and they made him an American patriot without waving American flags and the like in our face, thus staying true to the character without making me physically ill. There were some real surprises in the movie, even though I should have seen them coming as familiar with the Marvel Universe, but there was so much happening that I didn't.
Also, and this is important, the suit looked awesome, and believable. I wasn't surprised to see that several hundred digital artists had worked on this movie, cause it showed, and kudos to their work.
I only have a few, very minor nags about the movie:
The butler Jarvis had been replaced with a talking AI that even had some humor, but I understand the decision actually. It gave Downey Jr. someone to talk to while in the suit, and it made it possible for the audience to get some of the feedback that Stark did while in the suit, without breaking up the action. They did show the suit's GUI in detail at more than one point, and at one point, an annoying countdown was running, and Stark told Jarvis to just shut up and show the numbers. Because they weren't interesting and would get in the way of action and plot at that point.
Uhm, oh yeah, my other tiny nag was the fact that Stark for some reason had cut a perfect circular hole in some of his shirts for the device on his chest, instead of showing it glowing underneath as they did most of the time. But that was another tiny one.
Anyway, they made the tech seem realistic (with only a couple of devices impossible by today's standards, including Jarvis), the action looked great, the suit looked like it worked, and the acting was good. They even had a surprise ending that may be quite good news about other movies in the future. And they had the Ozzie Song (though they cut to a part without him singing) at a perfect moment in the movie.
Verdict (as inspired by Sunday at 10): Totally did not suck. Go watch it! |

But it seems I'll get my grubby hands on it after all. Yay :) |

| Link: http://www.brotherpain.dk/#38 |
|
So, in a little over a week, I've watched several films, all where shown in relation to the Danish film festival Natfilm Festival.
I've watched seven films, and because I felt like it, and because I can, here they are, presented in a handy table, that'll probably look crap in my current news-system:
| Natfilm Festival films |
| Film name |
Rating |
Date watched |
Notes |
| Chrysalis |
3.1 |
March 31st |
A somewhat average sci-fi flick, it has some interesting ideas and plots involving erasing and reprogramming minds, but it fails miserably in tying them together, and ends up throwing in a government coverup which just doesn't mix with the rest. It has some great action scenes that are violent and seem very realistic and unpleasant, but in the end, the movie doesn't know what it wants to be or do, and it just ends up being a bit of a mess. Not a bad movie, just not a great one either. |
| Reclaim Your Brain |
4.8 |
March 31st |
Also called "Your television is lying". Rainer starts out as a producer of crap reality shows, but after a car accident caused by a girl who's life he's responsible for ruining, he decides to try and educate people by using the biased ratings system to his advantage. Probably the best movie of the bunch. |
| WAZ |
4 |
April 1st |
"How much will it take to get you to kill the one you love?" is a question that is asked in this movie. It has good actors, horrible torture scenes, and a very unpleasant premise, and I think it was a great movie. |
| [REC] |
4.5 |
April 1st |
Soon to be a major Hollywood production even though the original Spanish movie hasn't premiered that many places yet. It's a zombie movie, and one of the better ones I've seen in a long time. The entire movie is watched through the camera lens of a local news team, but it doesn't seem contrived, and it is not a rip-off of Cloverfield or Blair Witch. This movie rocked, and actually managed to be scary, despite being a zombie movie. |
| Timecrimes |
3.2 |
April 4th |
A Spanish movie with an interesting premise involving time travel, though it doesn't deliver. |
| Sukiyaki Western Django |
4.5 |
April 5th |
A spaghetti western by Takasha Miike, based on Django, but set in Japan. All the actors speak English, albeit with heavy accents. The violence and action is over the top as one would expect, but it seems much more light-hearted film than some of his other works. Which I don't mind one bit. |
| Appleseed: Ex Machina |
4 |
April 7th |
A beautiful, animated film that still manages to look like the Shirow manga that it's based on. Direction by John Woo, so it's Awesome at times, but not constantly. |
The ratings are from 1-5, with 1 being utter crap and 5 being a bloody masterpiece, and are of course purely subjective. The notes are simply my thoughts on the films and not complete synopsises. All titles are the ones they were presented as here, and include a link to each movie's profile on IMDB.com. |

| 01-04-2008 17:31:44 CET- "April fools!" |
| Link: http://www.brotherpain.dk/#37 |
|
| Yeah, today is April 1st, and that means that most news sites I use become completely useless because every poster has to outdo the others with their stupid April Fools jokes. On another note, I've now tried acquiring brotherpain.com 3 times without any results. As in, I've asked my current host to acquire it for me, paid them, and nothing has happened, and it's cash up front no guaranties, so that sucks big time. Combined with less than stellar up-time on my site, it does mean that I'm seriously considering switching to a web-host that know what the fuck they're doing...
More positive news is that I'm going out to see two movies tonight, as I also did yesterday. Yesterday it was Chrysalis and Reclaim Your Brain, and today it's WAZ and [REC]. Edit: Came home around 3 AM, having had a few beers (but I've no lectures today, so don't worry), and it's now morning, and I'm obviously feeling a little bit like crap. Also, imdb-links added for the movies in question. And in order of how good they were, they are Reclaim Your Brain, [REC], WAZ, Chrysalis, though WAZ and [REC] were close. |

It seems I've strained my shoulder while helping my mother clear out her garage. Strained it badly. In fact, doing stuff like turning my head too to either side, lifting my left arm above shoulder level, and several other physical actions, cause me great pains. Ah well, hopefully it'll get better in a couple of days.
In the mean time, it's cold and just started snowing again (we're in goddamn March, it shouldn't be snowing now!), and the shops are closed for the next couple of days due to Easter. At least my internet's back up... |

In happier new, easter officially started today, and since I'm basically a Bright (even if I'm a bit too non-confrontational to go out and actually try to convince people that religion is bad), that means that I don't have any lectures until next Tuesday. Maybe I can find the time to get this site updated, and buy back my old domain (brotherpain.com), which I lost to a crappy domain registration system. |

| I came home from drinking this morning and read the sad news that Gary Gygax, the allfather of RPGs has passed away.
Together with David Arneson he started the hobby that has been a big part of my life for the past 18 years, and which has evolved into many different directions, from angsty White Wolf rpgs, LARP, and even MMORPGs.
Goodbye Gary, thanks for what you've created, how it's affected us all, and you will certainly be missed. |

|
So, I started on my 5th semester this Monday, and I've been constantly haunted by problems with sleeping, and even more so, with not having gotten enough sleep.
Basically, my internal clock is all messed up again, and my day-night-cycle insists that I stay up all night, and get sleepy around 6 in the morning.
That also means that certain days, I've increased my coffee intake exponentially (no, really), which combined with my tendency never to eat breakfast (no time in the mornings) is leaving my stomach a black, churning, hole.
Anyway, this means I've been doing this engineering thing for two whole years already, and I only have one and a half year left if I continue to pass my courses.
Means, that the next semester will be a sort of internship also, so it's time to start doing research and writing applications.
(Actually, it's been that time for the last half year, but the eternal procrastinator inside me couldn't be bothered then) |

| So, I just pulled the first all-nighter of the year. Started around noon yesterday, and stopped coding around 6AM this morning (and just got home). I'm pretty sure the couple of hours sleep I hope to get before the presentation of said code at 11AM will be filled with dreams of bitwise calculations, elusive, spontanious heartbeat errors, homemade print-functions, mismatching variable overflows, buggy hardware, and the like, cause that's pretty much all I can think about right now.
Fun? Not really... |

| Being to tired and hungover to do anything serious, I felt inspired to try my hand at making a stick figure version of Nathan. I've learned a few things doing this. For example, Illustrator is damned frustrating to work with, and I much prefer working with hand drawn art as opposed to vector based. In any case, here's the result of my efforts:

I had to export the picture as a BMP and edit it in Paint Shop Pro to get the transparancy (optimized for a specific forum) and size right... |

| Link: http://www.brotherpain.dk/#26 |
|
I've recently, against my better judgement, invested in an XBox 2 XBox 360. The main reason for this is the game Mass Effect, though Guitar Hero and Assassin's Creed haven't been bad purchases either, at least so far.
I've also bought Bioshock, which was a mistake. It's a first person shooter, and as such should be played on the pc. The only reason I haven't done this is because of Take 2's abhorrent practices of limiting installs, and keeping cd checks AND SecuROM 7, even in the STEAM-version. No thanks, I prefer my games without malware and DRM. Too bad the only way to get this is buying the console version (which has its own version of DRM actually), but I digress...
This of course means that I've now got one of those ever-popular gamer cards, that you see all the cool Xbox 360 owners sporting, though mine clearly shows a lack of time to play the hell out of these games like I want to.
Also, unlike the really cool kids, I don't have the option of making my own gamer pics, so I'll have to make do with the Pipboy from Bethesda's gamerpic pack. Yeah, I know, I'm supporting the people who are going to mutilate my beloved Fallout with my damn micro-payments, but what can you do? I bought both Morrowind and Oblivion (how I rue that), and I'll likely buy Fallout 3 as well, but I reserve the right to be disgusted with what they've done with the franchise.
Anyway, I've also recently been part of a large web project to make a WIKI from scratch. It didn't go as well as hoped, not least because we had to spend too much time on other courses, and that due to illness my PHP coding frenzy was postponed by several days, so that I didn't stop coding 'till around 6 hours to the deadline (which included documentation and tests), and the system didn't even have the features I wanted it to have, like RSS feeds, mail authentication, and so on. Still, we got the son of a bitch done, sort of, and I'm now studying for my exams. Had one Wednesday that went fairly well, and have another one on Saturday (!) and the last one (which is related to the project I just did) on Tuesday.
Yeah, fun times indeed.
Oh, and lest I forget, here's my gamercard, which can also be found in the "About" section:

Over the last one and a half months, I've been reading more than I have in the last couple of years. It's not that I don't like reading, but I haven't been able to find the time for it.
However, as I said, over the last 6 weeks or so, I've read through seven Discworld novels* and China Miéville's Perdido Street Station. In the next 12-13 weeks, I should also read several books on computer engineering, but they're many times thicker, and much too complex (and heavy) for me to sit with in a bus or a train and read a few pages a minute, at least if I want to have any chance whatsoever of understanding the subject matter. Ohwell...

Why do I only remember to update the news when I have massive hangovers? Ohwell.
I participated in a tour de chambre last night. For the French-impaired, that means essentially a tour of rooms, and it's a tradition for most dorms apparantly. So you go to each and every room on a hall, and you get something to drink every place. In our case, that was 18 rooms, and I had the dubious honor of hosting the last one. Unlike the rest, who had a comics-theme going of some sort (everything from Gummi Bears, to The Smurfs, to Batman, Mario Bros., etc.) this was my first TDC and I'd been a bit late in arranging anything. In other words, all I could offer up was a bottle of Captain Morgan and pirate music. Not that comic themed, I know, but what can you do on short notice?
Surprisingly, I seem to already be past the worst part of my hangovers. Not that I'm complaining about that in any way of course... |

| 04-07-2006 22:38:43 CET- "Back from the festival" |
| Link: http://www.brotherpain.dk/#14 |
|
I got back from Roskilde Festival very early monday morning, and got all the way home (long story I won't be telling here) tuesday morning. Even though the Daystar was burning nearly the entire time I was there with a minimum of clouds and cover, I haven't gotten as sunburned as I expected. It's mostly bad in the few places I forgot to apply the sunblock such as feet and elbows, because seriously, who would think I'd need to? Well I guess I did need to :P
My feet are much worse off, and I had to visit the samaritans tent on two occasions (on the same day) due to nasty blisters on my feet, especially my heels, one of the blisters even having blood in it apparantly. They're nearly healed now, with only one or two of them (which are on top of each other) still giving me grief and slowing my pace when I walk.
On the other hand, the concerts were good. Bob Dylan didn't put on an amazing show, I'm afraid, because if he had, there'd be no way I could nod off to it several times. Guns N Roses on the other hand actually surprised me by surpassing my (granted, not very high) expectations of them. Even though it's just Axl and some new band members, they're quite decent at playing. Of course, it seemed they now have 3 guitarists instead of just one, but maybe Slash is really as good as the rumor would have it? They played through all the old hits, at least any of those that I would call hits, they played for a solid 3 hours (plus a delay of about an hour before they started, meaning we stood watching the Orange Stage for about 4 hours straight), and had a lot of solos. Not just the regular solos that nearly every good metal song needs, but 10 minutes and longer solos, played by just one keyboard player (apparantly the band has two of those, I don't know why) on a grand piano, by the guitarists, by just the drummer, etc. And one of the guitar solos was apparantly Christina Aguilera's Beautiful. It's alright, I like the song, and it sounded good on guitars. But some could rightly say that there were too many solos. At one time someone next to me said something along the line of "Oh, is the light guy going to do a solo too now?". They had in excess of 10 solos, and that's excessive even by my standards.
This guy that used to be in Pink Floyd closed Orange Stage on sunday, and he played one HELL of a good concert. I couldn't see the stage due to helping some friends out in a bar to get them to get off earlier, but it still sounded incredibly good. The people I was hoping would get off early didn't, by the way, but actually got to stay there an hour and a half extra, which sucks beyond comprehension, as that means our trip home was one of the more crappy I've had. On the other hand, it allowed me to hear the last of the concert, something my friends wouldn't have wanted to stay for.
Now to answer some questions I've asked myself:
- Was it worth the money?
Well, it cost me 1350 DKR just for the ticket (that's about US $ 232 US or UK £ 125) plus what I spent on food and so on, so it wasn't cheap. The guys I was there with decided to work for their ticket, which means that they didn't get to see most of the concerts, and that they weren't really having fun the last two days. Plus they had to work for 24 hours to which sums up to a pay that compared to Danish wages is pretty crappy. I on the other hand was having fun (apart from my foot and blister problems) and heard a lot of great bands. So yes, it was worth the money, though the price is getting quite steep.
- Would I go again?
I most certainly would. Depending on who are playing next year, what the price increases to, and what my financial situation is like, I may not want to pay the price or may not be able to, and since I've tried working for my ticket once, I know that it sucks and I'm not doing that again. But if finances allow, and the program has at least two bands that I want to hear, and a few more that may be interesting, I'll propably be going.
And guess what, that was all the questions I could think of at this late hour. |

There'll be some big names of course, including Bob Dylan and what's left of Guns N Roses. There'll be a lot of other bands, obviously, but I honestly haven't checked the program for once.

It's a Toshiba Portegé M400-105, and for the people who don't know what it is, it's a so-called Tablet PC. What that means is that it is the love- child of a regular notebook and a Wacom Tablet. It's quite amazing for a variety of reasons, which I feel inclined to mention here.
For one, if does the same job as a Wacom CintiQ at a fraction (About half) of the cost while still having the full functionality of a very decent notebook. It also allows me I. take hand-written notesdirectly on the screen and it recognizes even my atrocious hand-writing, most of the time anyways I and in fact, this entire news-post is written using handwriting recognition with a minimum of editing I can also print basically any file to Windows Journal, where I can write notes on top of it, which are searchable. This is an extremely useful thing as a student (which I currently am) as I can take notes directly on to lecture slides.
Of course there are some problems as well. The price is still much higher than other notebooks with same statistics, but without the tablet functionality. Also it weighs quite a lot more than a paperpad, and its 2.1 kg (that around 4.6 lbs for three not yet enlightened to the wondersof the metric system) is a bit heavy to hold like a regular pad. It's also gets rather hat compared to paper, but if you don't mind shifting your position once in a while,or using it lying flat on a table ( it, not you) those are really minor concerns. The biggest problem though is, that Microsoft hasn't released a Danish version If the hand-writingrecognition tools, So that though for some reason they're quite willing to release localized versions of Windows XP Tableh Edition itself. something I have no use for whatsoever...
All in all though, I still think it's money well payed . Hopefully. I won't change my mind about that anytime soon.
Edit: a few small errors fixed and URL-tags added have been done using the keyboard. As useful as the hand-writing recognition is, for very exact work, there's still nothing that beats the keyboard... |

Since last, I've played a lot more DDO, as the game came out in Europe as well. I'm in a good RP guild, and despite problems with the graphics (I've turned off some settings that didn't help, turned up the resolution and texture quality, so it doesn't look like ass anymore) and sound (sound is still garbled and played slowly - especially a problem when it comes to in-game voice communication which otherwise works great) it's actually starting to be great fun. Not least because I'm starting to play the game in groups, and with the right groups those very very hard quests just become challenging and fun. The loot is still quite random, but much less crappy, and in a large guild equipment that you can't use might be useful to someone else, who on the other hand may have just what you needed. So despite not always getting the best rewards, I have quite decent equipment and enjoy playing my fighter Dietrich Keltairn immensely. I play on the Boldrei server and I'm in a guild called The Spellswords so if someone who reads this actually plays DDO, get a hold of me and tell me so. I'll propably be flattered...
Right, anyway, other than playing DDO, I do keep busy with actual studying. I'm currently in 4 courses, those being advanced math (linear algebra and so much more), digital design (VHDL, boolean algebra, binary numbers and the like), electronics (Kirchoff, Ohm and everything based on their laws) and beginning programming where I'm basically learning java.
Some of these courses are harder than others. The VHDL in digital design is especially problematic, as it looks like a programming language at first, but really isn't. Rather, it's a language designed to describe electronic circuits, and it's apparantly designed by people with no sense of proper context, making it very hard to learn, as the code sometimes simply doesn't make sense. Still, it's getting better. Math is also hard, as I may not be quite as good as reading before the lectures as I should be, but I'm sure I'll catch up, and the same can be said for electronics.
So far, my goal is finishing before I'm 30, but if I fall behind just a little bit (which is more the norm than the exception) that goal will propably change to finishing while I'm 30. We'll see :) |

| So, I'm still studying obviously, but I'm also heavy into wasting my time with various games. There are the browser-variants which I can waste my time with as long as there's an internet connection nearby, the MMORPGs which I don't spend more than enough time on to justify paying a monthly fee, and there are the singleplayer games. Let's start from the top, shall we?
OGame.dk: Yeah I know, not the greatest name for a game all about building up a planet, raiding other planets for resources and researching new technology. Sort of like Civilization I guess, but luckily for me, not really. It's addictive as hell, as reminds more of the browser-based game Utopia than anything else, so I'll propably have to stop playing at some point. Btw, this version is only for Danes (yes, they do check) but there are several versions for most natianalities, so everybody should be able to find one to play.
Next up is Urban Dead - A Massively Multi-Player Web-Based Zombie Apocalypse. Yeah, it's quite fun, running around town, desperately looking for supplies, ammo, and such, while avoiding (or in my case chopping down) zombies. The fun thing is that everybody in the game is a player, and I have a zombie to terrify the bumbling humans as well. Good fun, but due to the game having run for quite a while, and people being propably too organised, it's getting to look like a levelling threadmill more and more.
World Of Dungeons is a game of building a hero and going down dungeons with some friends, killing monsters, collecting loot and all that good stuff. The thing is, you build up your character, you choose a dungeon with your group, set up what tactics to use, and then you wait. Because it's not a real-time game at all. You get a report from the dungeon you've been in. It's detailed (if you look at the detailed report) and you can see exactly who did what, but you don't have any influence, beyond setting up what equipment and skills to use how and when, when to run away, when to heal your fellow party members, where to stand in combats, and such. It's ok, especially since you can do it a few bites at a time without having to rush to the computer to be on at certain times.
Now for the MMOGs:
First up is Dungeons & Dragons Online, or DDO for short. The American version's gone gold, but the European version is still in (open) beta. The game has some good parts and some bad. Let's start with the bad, shall we? It's system requirements are heavy. Recommended is a 3GHz Pentium 4 or equivilant, with about 2 gigs of RAM, and a better graphics card than my fairly new ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Basically, I've got it at the lowest possible settings and it's still chopping. I've had to turn of speech (which is too bad) because it sounds horribly unpleasant due to my system not being up to specs. As for game features they are really lacking some things, such as a decent trade system, trade skills (there aren't even Item Creation feats I think) and the loot is horribly random. One person will get a +1 short sword from a lvl 1 quest (that's a pretty good reward) while another will get a small steel shield. Wtf? And if you ever mess up in a dungeon, you can forget about getting decent xp for it, as every time you re-enter the same dungeon 20% of the xp for the dungeon is taken from the completion xp reward. Anyways, now for the good parts: The game is fun, sort of follows the D&D rules, though obviously converted to actual real-time. The dungeons are interesting (and instanced, so the only one there are who go in together), obviously hand-crafted, with interesting puzzles (not too many) and traps (too many unless you bring along a skilled rogue, but that's how it should be, though it means that this game is almost impossible to solo) and a Dungeon Master telling you tidbits of information. The last bit may sound corny but works very well, and would work even better if I didn't have to turn off the voice due to sound lag. The game seems fun to play and I have preordered it. But is it ready to launch? Not by a long shot. They have too many bugs to squash, and a lot of things arent' properly implemented yet, still, given time, and a system upgrade on my end, and who knows.
I also spend time on Guild Wars (which is wonderfully free, good-looking, but starts to lack in gameplay and fun factor as you get further along imho) and the free Everquest 2 trial. I'm not going to give a full review of any of these here though.
And I mentioned singleplayer games. Well, I just found Beyond Good & Evil in a bargain bin. When I first heard about this game, what I heard really didn't suit my taste, but after trying it I have to say that DAMN this is a good game. Good action, good atmosphere, good story, interesting characters, diverse gameplay without forcing you into annoying mini-games, and right now in the game, I am using stealth to make my way through a factory, and I do love my stealth games. Anyway, there are plenty of reviews to be found, so go look for the game on google, but I just had to mention it, because damn, this game is good. I just have to take a break for the next few days with it because I'm lagging behind on my homework. Ah well, good thing it's a singleplayer game so I can pick it up and put it down anytime unlike an MMOG or the like... |

I know it's been ages since last update, and there are several perfectly good reasons for that.
For one thing, I'm lazy as all hell. Another thing is that I've been busy with my studies. Actually made it through the neccesary course to start on studying as a software engineer, and started last week. It's been rough so far, and there's a damn lot to learn, so I don't have a lot of time for drawing. That, and as I said, I've been too lazy to get any serious drawing, and especially, inking, cleaning, scanning, coloring and so on, done.
Oh well, just wanting to show signs of life. I'll find the time to update sooner or later, hopefully sooner... |

| Yup, it's my birthday today, which propably tells you all a lot more about me than I'd want you to know. Ohwell, it's not like that info is hard to come by anyway if you really want to know. Anyways, happy birthday to me :) |

| Now I can edit and delete news. Basically, I can do all the good stuff I want to with them except having them write themselves (heh) and batch-deleting, but if I really need the last one, I'll propably just dig my hands into the guts of the database and do it manually. Next on my list is the pictures. |

| Or actually, at this point, it's just one admin script really. To add more news, whee! Next on my agenda are scripts to edit and delete news in case I fuck up. After that I plan on adding scripts for adding art, and then to actually make the art page work and not just be a bunch of pretty thumbnails :) |

|
| Added some new graphics for navigation and for these news-boxes, so now the site should be a little easier on the eyes. Also added a new logo, but it's most likely gonna go, and be replaced with something better-looking. Updates are obviously very slow still, because I'm still coding the main site when I have the time, and any content added to the database is added manually, since I haven't even begun to design the admin-parts of the site. So there... |

| Welcome to my new haunt. It's still the same old place with the same old owner and the same old content (well, it's coming anyway) but the code is all new. And not done yet besides that. Anyways, I've got plenty of spare time at the moment and maybe I'll actually get something done about the site now? We can only hope.. |
